    Editing photos with Gimp
    I downloaded Gimp last semester and have been playing with it on and off ever since. It is an incredibly powerful editing tool and I know I haven't even begun to learn how to use it! Here are some things I've done playing around with Gimp:
    This is one of the teatime photos from the other page. To create the "oil painting" effect I used one of Gimp's filters. (To do this effect, go to the Filter toolbar, choose Artistic and Oilify and then adjust however you want!) I like this effect a lot, especially because I can create my own "oil paintings" even though I'm terrible at painting. :)

    Next is a photo I took in Maine on top of a mountain in Acadia National Park. My digital camera stopped working that week and this photo was taken with a camera phone, which has a 2.0 megapixel camera. I adjusted the contrast and brightness on the photo. The day I took the photo was a rather cloudy day and I wanted to see if I could make the colors stand out a bit more than they do in the slightly hazy original.

    Finally, I also experimented with a photo collage in Gimp. I cropped a bunch of photos I had from a trip to Berlin I took two years ago with my old digital camera (a Canon Powershot SD110 Digital Elph with 3.2 megapixels) and created a collage that spells out (as best I could) "Berlin." To do this I had to crop and resize each photo and merge them together in layers on a new canvas.
    {berlin2.jpg}
    Here are the original photos before editing that made up this collage:
    {IMG_3114.JPG} Poster in the German History Museum {IMG_3120.JPG} One of several monuments around Berlin celebrating German achievements {IMG_3104.JPG} I don't recall the name of this place, it was actually just outside of Berlin {IMG_3113.JPG} Another poster {IMG_3000.JPG} A bus stop near Wannsee {IMG_3101.JPG} Another view of the same place in the "R" photo

    Final Thoughts
    I really had fun taking pictures for this assignment because it taught me how to use different angles and it helped me to become a bit more creative. Some frustrations I had while doing this were just in that I had a hard time getting really clear shots like I wanted.

    I experimented with photo editing several of the pictures I took. I used the program Paint.net. Most of my photos needed to be lightened and a few needed to be sharpened. Here are some examples of what I did with an original picture.
    {original2.jpg}
    Here is my original picture. You can see it is blurry.
    {sharper.jpg}
    Here is the picture sharpened a couple times. Goofy in the foreground is still blurry, but the two cats in the background are sharper.
    {auto_level.jpg}
    Next, I used auto-level under the Adjustments tab. It automatically made the picture quite a bit lighter.
    {tile_reflection.jpg}
    Here is the photo with a tile reflection effect.
    {black_and_white.jpg}
    Here I changed the saturation level to 0 to get a black and white picture.
    {oil_painting.jpg}
    This is the same picture with the oil painting effect.
    {glow.jpg}
    This is a glow effect added to the picture.
    {ink_sketch.jpg}
    This is the picture with an ink sketch effect added.
